Lingual Braces: Your Invisible Weapon

Lingual Braces: Your Invisible Weapon

Are you familiar with lingual braces? This type of orthodontic treatment is not as common as others, but still highly effective in giving you a straight and healthy smile.

Lingual braces are small, metal brackets glued to the back of your teeth. The primary advantage is obvious—this treatment is completely invisible. This is a large benefit for individuals who do not want braces to show but are not ideal candidates for Invisalign, or believe wearing aligners consistently would be too difficult.

Since he teeth must be large enough for sufficient room to glue the brackets behind to teeth  this treatment is primarily used for adults. The teeth must be large enough for sufficient room to glue the brackets—children, adults with smaller teeth, and individuals with severe bite issues are not ideal candidates.

The adjustment period for lingual braces is also longer than traditional ceramic braces or Invisalign. The tongue is continually rubbing up against the brackets, as opposed to your cheeks and lips, which can take up to a week or so to acclimate. Because of this, and the complexity of adhering brackets to the backside of teeth, lingual braces are rarely used on the bottom teeth. Orthodontists typically adhere either clear ceramic braces or clear aligners on these teeth.

While treatment can take a bit longer with lingual braces because of the mechanics of the system and shape of wires, at Moravec Orthodontics we employ the SureSmile system of 3-D imaging and robotically bent wires. This has significantly increased the efficiency of lingual braces while reducing overall treatment time!

It’s important to note that not all practices offer lingual braces. Orthodontists must take continuing education courses to properly learn the technology used for this type of treatment. If you are interested in lingual braces, do your research and find a qualified orthodontist. After an initial consultation, you will find out if you are a good candidate for this treatment, given the severity of your bite, tooth size, and other factors.

Due to the complexity and technique of applying lingual braces, this treatment option tends to be more expensive than others. According to the American Lingual Orthodontic Association, many patients perceive this treatment option to be extremely valuable since no one will know you have braces!

Before settling on any treatment option, it’s important to schedule an initial consultation with your orthodontist to assess your oral health, teeth, mouth, and jaw. Seeking professional advice to see if you are a good candidate for lingual braces is always a good idea.
